Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.67 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The Nikon D5000 represents a trend we like very much, the upper entry level DSLR camera. It features the familiar 12.3 megapixel sensor found in costlier stablemates, so it offers comparable image quality, while at the same time featuring a good degree of beginner level user friendliness. ...

At this price point there are several competent cameras to choose from, but the D5000 offers 3 compelling aspects: a fast continuous shooting speed, a flip out LCD, and the ability to shoot HD video. ..."

Review (Summary): "The D5000 swaps the 10.2 Megapixel CCD of its predecessor (and the D40x) for the same 12.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor featured on the Nikon D90. As such the D5000 also offers the same base sensitivity range of 200-3200 ISO with Lo-1 and Hi-1 options extending it to 100 and 6400 ISO respectively. A vibrating low pass filter and Nikon's Airflow system combat dust. ...

Nikon struck a great balance between number of pixels and real-life performance with the earlier D90, and the D5000 inherits that. The D5000’s kit lens may not have the reach of the D90’s DX 18-105mm VR, but it also remains a decent performer for the money. ..."

Hands-on Preview (Summary): "Nikon's already excellent digital SLR lineup gets a new member: the Nikon D5000. With the D90's 12.3-megapixel sensor, HD video capability, and a new 2.7-inch articulating LCD, the Nikon D5000 doesn't clearly displace any other cameras in the lineup, but fits between the D60 and D90 in both features and price. ...

... Our early look at still image quality from the Nikon D5000 reveals one awesome image maker, whose high-ISO settings blow our mind. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Nikon D5000 is a new 12.3 megapixel DSLR camera that can record HD movies at 1280x720 pixels / 30fps with sound. A 2.7 inch vari-angle LCD monitor makes it easier to compose your shots from difficult angles, while the extensive ISO range of 100-6400 should cope with most lighting conditions. ...

... Those who require dual control wheels, more dedicated buttons, a large viewfinder and greater compatibility with older AF lenses will still be better served by a D90 and are therefore advised to save up for the higher specified model. For everybody else, the Nikon D5000 provides much the same functionality and image quality in a smaller, lighter and quieter edition...."

Review (Summary): "The D5000 is something of a departure for Nikon - it's bigger than the D40/D60 sized cameras but still smaller than the D80/D90 body style. And it's not exactly what we'd call pretty. From a conceptual point of view, the D5000 is most of a D90 shoe-horned into a D60 body with an articulated screen added to the back, and it looks as if the designers took that as an instruction for what it should look like. It's adorned with a profusion of bumps, lumps and nubs. ...

It's pretty impressive that so much of the D300's technology has, in the space of just 18 months, gone from appearing in an $1800 camera to one that can be had for under $700. The image quality is undeniably impressive - the default JPEG settings might be a touch too tailored towards the D300 market but they can be tweaked to produce the bright, punchy output that former compact camera users are likely to expect. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Nikon D5000 squeezes into the gap between the D60 and the D90, as their mid-range consumer model. The D5000 may not seem like a logical model number but it does offer a fitting feature set for its positioning, and brings HD video to the mix. ...

There's no doubting the abilities of this camera to produce stunning still images – and moving images – but it does sit against some tough competitors, including some of Nikon's own models. The vari-angle LCD screen is a hugely impressive feature that I'm sure will soon become a common sight amongst future models but currently gives this camera a unique selling point. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Nikon D5000 is a new digital SLR that fits between the company's D60 and D90 models. The best way to describe the D5000 is like so: it takes the D90's guts and throws them into a D60-like body, adding a flip-down, swiveling LCD display. You get to keep most of the D90's top features: its sensor, AF and metering systems, live view, and HD movie recording capabilities. ...

... the Nikon D5000 is a very nice digital SLR that takes most of the good stuff from the D90 and puts it into a more compact, less expensive body. The D5000 doesn't support autofocus on that many lenses, so if you have a collection of older Nikkor glass, you may want to consider stepping up to the D90..."

Review (Summary): "Placed in between the D90 and D60, the new model is aimed at families, hobbyists and consumers interested in both stills and video. ...

My only concern with this camera is that there's little that appears to be new in it. It's the same sensor as the D300 and D90, same processor, same video system as the D90 and this makes me wonder whether costs have been cut to ensure company longevity. ..."

Preview (Summary): "...The Nikon D5000 has a compact size, although you can see straight away that the camera is thicker than the Nikon D60, for example. If we turn the camera in order to look at its back, we know why; the Nikon D5000 features an LCD monitor that can be folded out. 'Finally', is the first thought that came to my mind. ...

... The sensor's sensitivity ranges from ISO 200 to 3200 with expandable ISO to both sides to 100 and 64000 ISO equivalent. During interviews, we were told that the signal/noise ratio should at least be similar to that of the D90. ..."
