Nikon D90 Digital SLR Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.50 (out of 10)
DPReview's much anticipated review of the Nikon D90 was published today and overall they love the camera. While pointing out that the matrix metering allows" highlights to clip a bit too often," they also concede that it would be hard for them "to think of a better enthusiast-level camera"

Review (Summary): "Digitalsecrets has reviewed the new Nikon D90 Digital SLR, a 12.2-megapixel replacement for the D80, and a camera that can claim to be the first DSLR with video capture. Digitalsecrets said this about the Nikon D90: "As a 12 MP still camera, the D90 is quite an advance over the D80. Even though the individual image chip photosites are smaller than those on the previous D80, the images show better dynamics and lower noise." Read the full review by clicking the link below.

Digital Camera Info 9.00 10-15-08 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "News coverage of the Nikon D90 introduction focused on the fact that this is the first SLR to shoot video, a feature long available on even low-cost point-and-shoots. After working with the camera for several weeks, though, we're less excited about the video than the D90's strong across-the-board performance shooting stills. ...

... Setting video aside, though, there's an awful lot to like about this camera, from its fast burst mode to its fine low-light performance for flash-free photos and a Live View mode that's still not perfect, but does prove comfortable and convenient in certain shooting situations. ..."

The Nikon D90 help to ignite the movement toward the future with the inclusion of HD Video recording. With a price of $999 and low-noise at high ISO's the D90 has garnered a lot of interest since its launch. Jeff over at DCResource has just published their review of the Nikon D90 and loved both the performance and image quality of the D90. While he doesn't love the Live View implementation compared to others that he has tested, he highly recommends the camera to anyone who wants a great all around performer.

Camera Labs 8.75 10-02-08 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "... the Nikon D90 is the company's latest mid-range DSLR which features an inevitable boost in resolution over its predecessor, this time from 10.2 to 12.3 Megapixels. The D90's sensor employs CMOS technology and we understand it's the same DX-format chip used in the semi-pro D300, or at least one based on it.

There's no doubt the Nikon D90 is a very impressive DSLR, but like its predecessor, it's more about enhanced features and superior handling, rather than greatly improved image quality. Don’t get us wrong, the D90's stills look great, but they're not a significant step-up from 10 Megapixel models, and as you can see in our Results pages, ..."

Review (Summary): "It would seem logical for the first DSLR with video capture to come from a company that also makes camcorders. Nikon defied that logic, though, by creating the D90 ($1,000, estimated street, body only; $1,300 with AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens). And not only does it capture movies, it captures 720p high-definition video with sound. ...

... As a still camera, the D90 continues Nikon's strong record in the midrange. While its videomaking is more than a little clunky, it's the first (and, for now, the least expensive) DSLR with this capability. It's a very worthy follow-up to the D80, and stacks up well against similarly priced cameras. ..."

Review (Summary): "The 12.3-megapixel D90 captures HD video at a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at 24 frames/second with the clarity and depth-of-field control that only a DSLR can provide. ...

... Once again, Photo Review has been impressed with the outstanding performance of a Nikon DSLR at high sensitivity settings. In both available-light shots and flash shots in low light levels, the test camera turned in an outstanding performance, recording images with little visible noise and no sign of blotchiness. ..."

Outback Photo 7.67 10-03-08 Read Full Review
The Nikon D90 is one of the hottest camera's to hit the market this year and for good reason....it offers the high-ISO capabilities of its more expensive siblings and is the first DSLR to offer video capture.

Outback Photo has published a review diary for the Nikon D90 where they discuss information about the D90 as they use it - rather than waiting to publish a review until a conclusion has been reached. Since they are not videographers they do not discuss the video abilities, which may be a good thing (for Nikon) since this feature has not won much praise. You can read the full review diary at the link below.

Review (Summary): "This new DSLR camera inherits its older brother's outer dimensions, power source, 11-point AF module and most of its external controls, but adds a newly developed 12 megapixel CMOS sensor, EXPEED image processor, and a bigger and much higher-resolution rear LCD screen. The D90 also features a slightly improved viewfinder coverage, 3D focus tracking, ultrasonic sensor cleaning, 50% faster burst shooting, a larger buffer, Active D-lighting, in-camera raw development, an expanded ISO sensitivity range, HDMI connectivity, geotagging by way of an optional accessory, Live View with Face Priority AF - and on top of all that, it's the first DSLR ever produced to offer a movie mode! ...

... The bottom line is that if you are looking for a high-performance yet affordable DSLR for taking high-resolution still photographs of varied subjects, I can highly recommend the Nikon D90 to you...."<,/P>

Luminous-Landscape 7.00 10-03-08 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "The Nikon D90 is that company's newest mid-range consumer DSLR. It has all the requisite features for a current $999 camera, including a 12.3 Megapixel sensor, claimed to have similar low light characteristics to its bigger brother, the D300. It shoots at up to 4.5 FPS and features ISO settings up to 3200. It also features a bright, hi-res 3" rear LCD, sensor dust shake removal, Nikon's always excellent handling and build quality, and so must I even ask - what's not to like? ...

... This is clearly a first generation product. Nikon saw an opportunity to add video capability to the DSLR and did so in a simple manner with little intention of creating a new type of hybrid camera. The D90 is a stills camera (and a very good one) at a very reasonable price, that happens to also shoot moderate quality video. ..."
