Review (Summary): "Almost exactly a year after the arrival of the EOS 40D, Canon has announced the 50D, which we're assured will be a sister-model, rather than a replacement. Recent history has seen Canon release new models every 18 months-or-so but it's been a busy year with newcomers such as the Nikon D300 getting a lot of attention in the 40D's keen amateur/professional segment. ...
... Below ISO 1600 image output is clean with well balanced contrast and colors and as you would expect from a DSLR with a 15 megapixel sensor the 50D delivers a fair amount of detail. Having said that, in terms of per-pixel sharpness the 50D cannot quite keep up with the better 10 or 12 megapixel APS-C DSLRs in the market. ..."
Review (Summary): "It sports a 15.1-megapixel sensor, a 6.3 fps (frame per second) framing rate (JPEGs), and extended ISO settings, up to 12,800. This 14-bit raw camera has a bright and daylight-readable 3" LCD, numerous Custom Functions, and a set of controls that, after practice, allow for just about every trick in the exposure and focusing book. ...
... Overall, the 50D is an excellent photographic tool that's flexible and delivers very good image quality. The ease of changing settings and ability to respond to changing light and focusing conditions is what makes it a great tool for anyone who wants to get involved in their photography. ..."
Review (Summary): "Externally the EOS 50D greatly resembles the EOS 40D. The dimensions are identical and there’s only a slight difference in weight with the new model coming in a few grams lighter. Most of the major differences are internal, with the headline feature being a significant boost in resolution from 10.1 to 15.1 Megapixels using a newly designed APS-C CMOS sensor. ...
... The Canon EOS 50D is a worthy update to the already excellent EOS 40D, equipping it not just with the latest features, but also a significant boost in resolution without compromising noise levels. ..."
Review (Summary): "After putting the 50D through a rigorous body of tests (undertaken using the 28-135mm lens, part of a $1600 kit set), we came out with an impression of it being a solid, dependable camera, but without any amazing new features. ...
... The Nikon D300, at roughly the same price as the 50D, posted superior scores in color, dynamic range, manual noise, automatic noise, and low light tests. The 50D is a solid performer, but didn't outshine the alternatives. ..."
Review (Summary): "It's inside where you'll find the Canon 50D's major changes. First is the new 15.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, a significant upgrade from the 40D's 10-megapixel sensor. Major changes to the design of the microlens array as well as to the sensor itself have actually reduced sensor noise despite the increase in resolution. The change has allowed Canon to offer a wider range of ISO settings than the company has ever offered, ranging from ISO 100 to 3,200, plus two higher settings: H1 is equivalent to ISO 6,400 and H2 takes the camera to 12,800. ...
Its high frame rate, 14-bit A/D conversion, high-resolution LCD, and high-ISO are the Canon 50D's most important features, with the high-resolution sensor coming in behind that. ...
Review (Summary): "Serious amateur and semi-professional photographers are the target market for the Canon EOS 50D - the same market that its predecessors, the 40D, 30D, 20D, ... were targeted to. Like its predecessors, the 50D can be used in fully automatic point and shoot mode or anything between this mode and complete manual control. ...
... As sensor density increases, so too does high ISO noise - unless improvements in the sensor and subsequent image processing are made. We have been seeing these improvements as the DSLR lines mature. What the above crops show - and what I've been seeing, is that the Canon EOS 50D has slightly more noise than the 40D at identical high ISO settings. Only a slight gain in noise from a sensor with 50% more pixels is still quite an accomplishment in my opinion. ..."
Steves-Digicams has posted their review of the new Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR. This new 15-megapixel camera is a cross between Canon's consumer and pro lines and offers a new 3.0" LCD with 920k pixels, DIGIC 4 processor, HDMI output, and fast 6.3fps continuous shooting.
Steves-Digicam said that while the camera doesn't necessarily improve on image quality over the previous 40D, it did manage to maintain the high-quality standards set by it predecessor while increasing resolution, frame rate, and ISO sensitivity. .... Review (Summary): "I managed to get my hands on a new production Canon EOS 50D since a few days ago and and am doing a review of this new camera as I have promised. As in my review of the Canon EOS 40D last year, I will leave the comprehensive technical review to publications like dpreview.com. ..
... I think the 50D images are usable up to ISO 6400. ISO 6400 cleans up reasonably well after noise reduction on a computer. ISO 12800 has too much color noise and also exhibits quite noticeable vertical banding even at reduced web size. ISO 12800 is probably only really for emergency use, and has too much noise for any serious usage. ..."
Review (Summary): "Those who are familiar with the EOS 40D, will immediately perceive the resemblance when holding the Canon EOS 50D for the first time. In fact, the only difference at the front seems to be the type indication. The back of the EOS 50D differs more significantly, although this only seems due to the different monitor compared to the 40D. ...
Through a consistent and natural color reproduction, a convincing dynamic range, excellent frame rate, fine applicable ISO range, excellent reproduction and user-friendly operation, Canon shows what the Canon EOS 50D stands for. ..."
The new Canon EOS-50D is the successor to the popular 40D but improves upon it with a new 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, an expanded ISO range of 100-12,800 (matching the Nikon D700 and D3), a new Live View mode with face detection, new 3.0" VGA LCD display, and Canon's new, faster, DIGIC IV processor. Photography Blog has just reviewed the new EOS 50D and said that Canon has "mainly placed their bets on the combination of the new 15 megapixel sensor and Digic 4 processor, hoping that the headline-grabbing pixel count will steal the limelight - thankfully this hasn't come at the expense of image quality."

Review (Summary): "The Canon EOS-50D ($1399, body only) is a midrange digital SLR that "complements" the popular EOS-40D, rather than replacing it. It's no secret that I'm a fan of this line of Canon D-SLRs - I've used three generations of them for the product shots on this website, the latest being the 40D. ...
... The Canon EOS-50D is a very competent midrange digital SLR. It offers very good photo quality (with a quality lens attached), rocket-fast performance, plenty of manual controls and customizable features, and a super-sharp 3-inch LCD..."
