Olympus Stylus 790SW Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.85 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "Upon first inspection, the Olympus Mju 790 SW looks nice, clean, has stylish lines, a large screen, internal parts and good features. Closer inspection shows that it keeps up with its first impression and is a very capable little camera. ...

Whilst not offering a great deal in features compared to other cameras in it's price bracket, the Olympus Mju 790 SW does offer the waterproofing and shockproofing. These features alone are worth getting it for as the waterproofing offers some great new adventures by opening the scope of where you can go with it. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Olympus Stylus 790SW is the manufacturer’s third waterproof digital camera. It has common point-and-shoot specs: 7.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2.5-inch LCD screen. It also aims to be trendy, as it comes in five different colors. The durable 790SW adds face detection to its resume and retains the shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof, and dustproof body. ...

... The Olympus Stylus 790SW has a lot of interesting features packed into an extremely durable body. It can survive falls, water, sandstorms, and toddlers. The 7.1-megapixel digital camera is unique in that it can go underwater without a separate housing. However, if we came back from an expensive snorkeling trip with an album full of pictures from this camera, we’d be pretty disappointed. ..."

Review (Summary): "This is a one of a kind camera. To begin with it has some very special features that make the Olympus Mju 790 SW stand out from the crowd. The Mju 790 is uniquely shockproof, classified as an MIL-STD-810F standard. You can drop this camera from around a height of 1.5 meters to the floor and you won't have to worry about damaging it. Nearly every camera owner has experienced dropping his camera at one stage of his photographic life. ...

... Looking at the Mju 790 SW overall performance we are satisfied. I can imagine that the Olympus Mju 790 SW will do perfect for an active target group. This group highly appreciates the typical features that distinguish the Mju 790SW from the competition. And to be honest, I can quite understand that. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Stylus 790SW is Shockproof, meaning you can drop the Stylus 790SW from up to 5 feet; Waterproof, meaning you can submerge the Stylus 790SW in up to 10 feet of water; Freezeproof, which means you can leave the Stylus 790SW overnight in my Canadian backyard: as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 degrees Celsius); and it's Sand and Dustproof: Olympus doesn't say how Sand or Dustproof the Stylus 790SW is, but I'll assume that since it's watertight up to 10 feet, that's enough to keep sand and dust out, too. ...

... There's a lot to like in the Olympus Stylus 790SW, beginning with the fact that it has been specifically toughened to be taken everywhere: dropped on the ground, submerged in the water, left in the sand - as the maxim goes, the camera that gets taken is the camera that gets used, and this camera is definitely designed to be taken. It is well-fitted with scene modes, and attempts to initiate a novice user with its guided shooting mode functionality, but in practice I found the textual shorthand that's used to guide the user to be a little too mysterious at times. ..."

Review (Summary): "Point-and-shoot digital camera makers make many claims about their products, but few boast about the toughness of their snappers as Olympus does about its 7.1 megapixel Stylus 790SW ($239-$350). What sets this byteshooter apart from others in its class is its "take me into harm's way" attitude. It's shockproof, waterproof and freezeproof. With those kinds of features, you'd think the unit would look the part, but it doesn't. In fact, its demeanor is quite ordinary-more Chevy Aveo than Hummer. ...

... Outdoor photos captured with this Olympus model were sharp and had good color fidelity. Although its handling of dynamic range in shots-the shift between dark and light areas-wasn't perfect in every frame captured even with its shadow adjustment features turned on, more often than not, it produced photos worth printing when shooting in situations that were challenging to a digital camera's contrast rendering capabilities..."

Camera Labs -----  12-17-07 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "... The 790 SW may look like a normal compact digital camera, but it can in fact operate underwater at depths up to 3m. It's also shock-proof to a height of 1.5m and freeze-proof down to minus 10 degrees Celsius. This is one tough camera that's been designed to survive the elements whether you're swimming, skiing, or simply have kids who like to throw things around. ...

... We've tested compacts which cost the same and deliver much better quality, while also boasting wider angle lenses and proper anti-shake facilities. So if you're after the best image quality and photographic features, and aren't bothered about the tough or waterproof aspects of the 790 SW, we'd recommend buying a different camera. ..."
