GX-10 Digital SLR Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 5.13 (out of 10)
Review: "The first thing you notice about the $999.99 GX10 is its size and weight. This is definitely an active shooter's camera. It weighs in at about 10-ounces and is weatherproof with rubberized, sealed flaps over everything that matters. The battery compartment feels as watertight as a submarine and the SD card hatch requires two distinct movements - a flip and a twist of a little lock - to open. Add in a 2.5-inch TFT LCD and you can tell Samsung means business.

...Once you get past all the bells and whistles, what you want is a camera that takes consistently good pictures in varying light levels without much futzing. I can safely recommend the GX10 as one of the better cameras in that respect."

Review (Summary): "After enjoying something of a renaissance for its compact camera range, Samsung has also found a way into the digital SLR market by re-badging a series of Pentax models. A Samsung representative has assured me that the company will soon launch a DSLR of its own original design, but in the meantime the re-badging tactic provides the company with a bridgehead from which it can build brand familiarity.

The Samsung GX-10, and presumably by extension the Pentax K10D as well, proves yet again that the digital SLR market isn’t a two-horse race. This camera provides more versatility in its innovative shooting modes, more image quality in its processing engine and faster performance from its high-speed electronics than anything the competition have to offer in this class. Add the rugged durability of the weatherproof body and you have a photographic tool that any keen photographer will quickly learn to love. ..."

Review (Summary): "If you wanted to enter the digital SLR market with no previous experience of it, you might consider using someone else's camera design. And if you were Samsung, and you really wanted to make a good job of it, you'd find a company renowned for its optics and with a huge legacy of cameras to build on. In fact, you'd choose to use Pentax. Now Samsung's GX10 is in the market - a rebadge of the Pentax K10D with a few minor changes. ...

In all, Samsung's GX10 is a good camera. It's well designed, feature-rich and operates well. If you tweak the default settings it produces very good pictures and is backed up by useful shooting functions - the image stabiliser in particular is worth having. The camera feels good to use and will let you get on with making great pictures. There isn't much to dislike. ..."

Review (Summary): "The GX-10 ($999) is Samsung's third digital SLR. Like the other two (the GX-1S and GX-1L), the GX-10 is based on a Pentax camera - in this case, the Pentax K10D. The differences between the GX-10 and the K10 are subtle changes in the user interface (menus and buttons), RAW support (the GX-10 only supports one RAW format: DNG), and the software bundle.

With the same sensor, image processor, and firmware, the GX-10's photo quality and performance is identical to that of the K10D. In terms of photo quality, this means that the GX-10 has mediocre straight-out-of-the-box JPEG quality (which can be fixed if you tweak some settings), and great RAW image quality."

Review: "Though not nearly as identical to the Pentax K10D as earlier models were to their Pentax twins, the Samsung GX-10 is similar enough to consider the same for review purposes. On the upside, that means this 10-megapixel digital SLR turns out to be a very good camera for its price: a feature-packed, well-designed and capable shooter.

...whether the Samsung GX-10 is a good camera is almost beside the point. It's neither better nor cheaper than its Pentax equivalent, and Pentax has both the photographic history, service experience, and breadth of dSLR lenses and accessories (which will nevertheless work with the GX-10). So why even consider it?"

Review (Summary): "Samsung is not the first name that springs to mind when you think of DSLRs, but since their cooperation with Pentax, it is already their third digital reflex to appear on the market. Their latest model the Samsung GX10 is based on the Pentax K10D and sports a 10-megapixel sensor, anti-dust technology and built-in image stabilization. ...

If... you are new to DSLR photography you will find an excellent mid-range DSLR in the Samsung. Looking at its extensive list of features it can certainly hold its own among other DSLRs today. The GX10 is built like a tank with solid well-placed buttons and dials and handy weatherproofing. It provides fast performance with excellent results and comfortable handling. ..."
