Samsung NV10 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review: "Over the past few weeks I’ve been taking a look at Samsung’s remarkable new range of digital cameras, including the powerful Pro815 bridge camera and the stylish NV3 pocket snapshot model. This week I've got another new Samsung model, the NV10, which manages to combine both power and style in one very tempting package. It has already won the prestigious EISA (European Imaging and Sound Award) this year for Best Product in the compact camera category.

Another superb new camera from the most improved camera company in the business. The NV10 combines sleek style, excellent build quality, good performance and innovative design with good photographic results. It is certainly among the best of the 10-megapixel compacts, and good value for money too."

Review: "The Samsung NV10 is the newest addition to Samsung's range of compact digital cameras. Offering 10 megapixels, 3x zoom lens, Advanced Shake Reduction mode and a 2.5 inch LCD screen, the Samsung NV10 is on paper very similar to a number of other cameras. It has a very different user interface to most digicams, however, which utilizes a touch-sensitive smart button system to make its menu system more accessible.

The NV10 is a premium-level product that is both well made and well thought out, with a unique menu interface that makes the camera easier to understand and navigate than a conventional system. The Samsung NV10 really does look and feel different to most other cameras out there. Sadly, although the NV10 offers a truly unique user experience, the images that it produces do not match the high quality of the rest of the camera."

Review (Summary): "Under an unpretentious appearance, the Samsung NV10 hides a dramatically new type of user interface. This camera, part of a series called New Vision has a 10-megapixel resolution, a 3X optical zoom and a 2.5-inch monitor. ...

The Samsung NV10 is a camera that must be tamed. It takes time to get accustomed to its interface. But once used to it, it can prove to be fast to use, and possibly faster to use than any of the other systems used on other compact cameras. Equipped with a solid group of scene modes, the NV10 also offers a Manual mode that makes it even more versatile. So, while staying within the bounds imposed by the characteristics and intended use of the camera, the NV10 can produce good images that will easily generate bright and vibrant prints.

Review: "Back in July Korean giant Samsung announced a new series of cameras, the NV (New Vision) range that finally, firmly put the 'cheap n cheerful' plastic camera image behind them with three new all-black, all-metal models packed with features and genuinely desirable designs. The ultra-slim NV10 sits in the middle of the range and sports a 10MP CCD, 3x Schneider-branded optical zoom and a surprisingly sophisticated feature set.

The NV10 is, undoubtedly, a lovely camera (I kept thinking; if this had a Canon or Nikon badge on it it would sell by the boat load) and one that offers an usually wide feature set for such a slimline model. The key to the success of the design is the new user interface, which puts every conceivable control at your fingertips and makes experimenting with the settings uniquely fast and incredibly easy..."

Review: "The 10-megapixel camera race is on and we are not just referring about the big bulky DSLR variants. There are already several 10-megapixel compact digital cameras in the market and our feature today is one of these little powerhouses that you can carry conveniently in your pockets. From the manufacturer that has brought us several award-winning TVs and mobile phones, comes something new and exciting. Samsung might be lesser known for making cameras, but this paradigm is going to change with their new NV series. Focusing on retro designs, their new compact digital cameras are definitely going to create a big wave. For starters, lets us take a closer look at Samsung's first attempt at a 10.1-megapixel digital camera, the NV10.

In our tests, colors were vibrant, yet natural, and the Schneider lens also performed well, suppressing aberrations and rendering good edge-to-edge sharpness. Noise (grains) were spotted from ISO 400 and above and photos might be affected by some slight barrel distortion at maximum wide angle."

Review: "Samsung's NV10 - one of three cameras in the company's new NV series - is both intelligent and intuitive. It's a 10-megapixel, 3X optical ultracompact with a 7.4mm-to-22.2mm range (equivalent to a 35mm lens with a 35mm-to-105mm zoom) and corresponding maximum f-stops of f/2.8 to f/5.1 - all decent specs, but nothing truly outstanding. At less than an inch thick (not counting the lens), it's one of the thinnest cameras on the market.

The camera fared well during lab testing. I didn't find much noise in the daylight shots, but high ISO settings indroduced some colored noise. Pictures had pretty good color, with just a touch of purple fringing. My flash pictures displayed nice illumination with lots of detail in the highlights. The NV10 averaged 1,900 lines of resolution, which is excellent for a 10MP camera. There was no pincushion distortion to speak of, and just a touch of the usual barrel distortion."

Review: "The NV10 ($399) is one of three models in Samsung's stylish new NV series of digital cameras. This one's a compact camera (though not as small as the NV3) that features a 10 Megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, digital image stabilization, and a 2.5" LCD display. Those are all pretty run-of-the-mill features.

The Samsung NV10 is a compact camera that has some hits and some misses. On the positive side, it's a very well built and stylish compact camera, with a good feature set. However, its photo quality and battery life are disappointing, two things which are more important than how cool a camera looks in your hand. The NV10's most notable feature also gets a 50/50 rating from me, and that's its new user interface. While it is certainly clever and time-saving, it was also very frustrating at times, making me wish that it had a regular four-way controller like every other camera."

Review: "The Samsung NV range offers power and features, matched with stylish bodies and cutting edge design. The NV10 is no different, wedging an unfeasibly large 10Mp CCD into a pocket-sized shape. Thankfully, this version has a standard, retracting 3x optical zoom, unlike the demented design of the sibling NV7 with its relatively enormous lens.

With a colossal 10Mp resolution, there's the temptation to take this camera into the countryside for some landscape work, but really that isn't what the camera, or most other compacts, is for. You really do not need that high a resolution for people and holiday shots which is what this will see the most use doing. The drawback of that high res is that there is noise at every ISO setting, including 100, though there it's the shadow areas..."
