Olympus E-P1 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review Diary (Summary): "From the moment Olympus and Panasonic announced the new Micro Four Thirds standard we waited for the first Olympus offering. Panasonic made quite an impression with its m4/3 Lumix G1. The G1 looks more like a smaller ... Olympus has chosen a different path. The new E-P1 (P stands for the Olympus tradition of their Pen cameras) is styled like a Rangefinder camera and is even smaller than the G1. ...

... So far we think that the image quality is nice and likely even better than the E-620 (and we like using E-620 a lot). We also need to wait for some more RAW converter options as the Olympus Studio 2 is too slow for our usual workflow. ..."

Review (Summary): "The E-P1 was designed from the outset to be as small as possible using current components and this philosophy led to the decision (not, I'm sure, taken lightly) to leave out both viewfinder and built-in flash. The FL-14 flashgun overcomes the latter, but the optional viewfinder attachment won't help anyone using the zoom lens ...

... In fact the biggest question I'm left with looking at that list is why don't I want to give this one back? Because in spite of - perhaps in a small way because of - the E-P1's limitations (some of which could be solved with a much-needed firmware upgrade), it's a camera that ticks an awful lot of boxes and fills an awfully big hole in the digital camera market. ..."

First Impressions: "Fifty years ago, Olympus came up with the Pen-series of half-frame film cameras. These cameras were well known for their design, compact size, and photo quality, and ended up selling over 17 million units. The most significant of these models was the PenF, released in 1963. ...

One of the biggest features on the E-P1 is its ability to record HD movies. That makes it the first Olympus interchangeable lens camera (which includes D-SLRs) to support video recording. The E-P1 can record video at 1280 x 720 at 30 frames/second (with stereo sound) until the file size reaches 2GB. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Olympus E-P1 brings together the image quality and interchangeable lenses of a digital SLR, the video capability of a camcorder, and the size and portability of a point and shoot, all in one compact package.

The first Micro Four Thirds model from Olympus is inspired by the popular 1950's PEN series of film cameras, but is very much a product of the new millennium, offering a wealth of up-to-date must-have features. Mark Goldstein finds out if the E-P1 really is all the camera you will ever need in his latest expert review"

Review (Summary): "... the Olympus PEN E-P1 is a whole new kind of digital camera - it offers the image quality and sensor from a Digital SLR, with interchangeable lenses, and the compact body of a point and shoot camera due to the Micro Four Thirds design. ...

... The Olympus PEN E-P1 really is a ground breaking, genius product, with a gorgeous metal body that fits in your pocket, compact lenses that retract inside themselves, and image quality and features to rival some of the best Digital SLRs ..."

Hands-on Preview: "The first Micro Four Thirds camera from Olympus pays unabashed homage to the Pen F; from the classic styling to the long running teaser campaign running in print and online, the E-P1 doesn't just wear its influences on its sleeve; it shouts about them from the rooftops (and is referred to in some parts of the world as the 'Digital Pen'). There's even a subtle engraving on the chrome edge of the top plate that reads 'Olympus Pen Since 1959'. ...

The E-P1 is, essentially, an Olympus E-620 (and by extension an E-30 in most respects) crowbarred into a compact, rangefinder-style body. Aside from the changes necessitated by the removal of the mirror and optical viewfinder - and a slight firmware upgrade (for new live view features, improved image processing) it is as fully fledged as any mid-range SLR. This is quite an achievement. ..."

Hands-on Preview: "... The new Olympus addition, the E-P1, means pure emotion to me. Back to reality; the Olympus E-P1 is the long-awaited Micro Four Thirds system camera. A mock-up version was introduced during the Photokina 2008 for the first time, and now, the Olympus E-P1 has finally become reality. ...

... When taking the Olympus E-P1 into your hand, you will immediately appreciate the high-quality finish and the high-quality material of the housing. The new compact SLR camera feels very solid and offers a stable hand-fit. ..."

Steves-Digicams has reviewed the new Olympus PEN E-P1 Interchangeable Lens Camera and loved it. While they found a few items that could have been better, they feel that Olympus has hit a home run despite its rather high price.

The Olympus PEN E-P1 is a micro four-thirds camera thus it does away with the reflex mirror but retains the interchangeable lens capabilities of traditional SLRs. This has allowed Olympus to reduce the camera down to the size of a large point & shoot, while retaining the advanced features and control of a traditional SLR. Read the full review over at Steves-Digicams for their findings.

Review: "The Olympus E-P1 has a 12.3-megapixel sensor that is capable of both still and HD video capture. Many of the features in the E-P1 can also be found in Olympus's digital SLRs, including face detection, Art Filters, the SuperSonic Wave Filter for dust reduction, sensor-shift image stabilization, multiple exposures, and magnified focus assist. But the Olympus E-P1 introduces a lot of features new to the company as well, including HD video, digital leveling, 324-area matrix metering, onboard music, and in-camera music/still/and video integration. ...

... Its good quality at high ISO makes the Olympus E-P1 a very good available-light camera, which includes liberal use indoors. Street photography is also a great way to use the Olympus E-P1, thanks to its 17mm f/2.8 lens and relatively unassuming presence. ... ..."

Review (Summary): "In their promos for the 12.3 megapixel Olympus E-P1 camera, the company often referred to the heritage provided by their Pen series SLRs first introduced in 1959. That’s understandable, because the Pen models were unusually compact and featured classic styling. ...

The E-P1 system is great as a compact alternative to a DSLR for occasions when you don’t want to lug a heavy camera bag. By next year, additional lenses will be introduced and those will provide even more versatility. ..."
